Re: Tank cleaning?

Low 50's? Wow, I have to keep the house at 68 at least and even then, I'm wearing a sweatshirt and sweater. In the 50's I'd never get out of bed.

Re: Heater recs please!

No heater is necessary. You really can't get one for a tank that small that would be reliable and safe anyway. The ones made for small containers do not have a thermostat in them and it's always a possibility that your animals could get cooked.

Re: Feeding frenzy

Yeah just as much spirulina powder that sticks to the outside of a dry round toothpick. They get it like once every 2 or 3 weeks.

This is my one gallon tank after adding a bit of spirulina powder.

I can't say what they are but they resemble baby brine shrimp. Maybe some type of copepod?

Re: Plant fertilizer in shrimp tanks

It is not advisable. The shrimp are eating the algae as soon as it appears and that's why you never see any. The aquarium fertilizers like Seachem's Flourish might be safer but I still wouldn't use it. I have never seen any algae growth in my one gallon tank (except for the macroalgae that now has a...

Re: New Tank Setup, Please Review

JennyPenny, how about vinegar to clean the rocks? I realized from the pictures of the lava rocks that there is some dirt and old moss or grass attached to them. If I shouldn't boil them, maybe scrub really well and then bathe in vinegar? Thanks again for your help. The problem with cleaning lava ro...

Re: Mossball / cladophora / gorgone

Just to help. The "gorgon" is a piece of sea fan. Since it hasn't caused any problems in the ecosphere, it certainly won't in a larger container.

Re: Help-Ammonia in tank

Something that most aquarium keepers don't know is that the toxicity of ammonia increases with the pH of the water. At a pH of 7.0, virtually none of any ammonia present is in the toxic form. At a pH of 8.0, nearly all of it is toxic and readings should be at 0 at all times. https://pethelpful.com/f...

Re: Setting up my Hawaiian-theme Nano Tank

Tap water does not always contain nitrates. Mine has none. If any minerals are added to distilled or r/o water, is is tantamount to contamination. The water is no longer pure. The distilled water sold for 80 cents a gallon at Walmart is perfect. It is not necessary for the pH of an Opae tank to be 8...

Re: Setting up my Hawaiian-theme Nano Tank

If the tank is set up correctly with the proper salt and true distilled water, (if it says minerals were added, it is NOT distilled water) the pH should never be an issue. Your attempts to adjust pH were what led me to assume you used tap water. However, what you did use is not very far from being t...

Re: Setting up my Hawaiian-theme Nano Tank

You should have set up the tank using a good sea salt like Instant Ocean and distilled water. Tap water should never have even gotten near. A mix of 4 tablespoons of Instant Ocean to a gallon of distilled water is perfect. There's really no need to even check salinity if that formula is followed.
