Re: SaltyShrimp Brand Mineral
Those products are made for freshwater shrimp. There is no reason to use them with Opaes as long as a proper sea salt is used when setting up the tank. In fact, it would probably be detrimental to use them.

Re: In need of help
I would suggest leaving the top open to promote better gas exchange. In sealed environments, at least 25% of the volume of the container needs to be air space. The gas exchange is critical to survival of any aquatic species and these shrimp are no exception. Also, do not feed as much. A few grains o...

Re: Setting up my Hawaiian-theme Nano Tank
Prime does not remove ammonia. it just detoxifies it and only temporarily. Ammonia readings can actually go up after using it. Test kits show both toxic and non-toxic ammonia. That's why a zero nitrite reading is a better indicator of a cycle having completed.

I would wait a bit longer until the nitrites go away

Re: First Tank! Q&A, Stories and Moments Thread
The population could have stabilized itself due to numbers and available food. Feeding more could encourage breeding but that's probably not a good idea at this time.

Re: New tank mate
I have to warn you. Red Claw crabs love to kill and eat snails. They also have to be fed regularly. Whether it will prey on the shrimp, I don't know. They also do not require the salinity level that the shrimp do. I have one and I keep him in water that is half the salinity of my Opae tank. One more...

They will probably come back with his next molt. He should do fine without them though

Re: New shrimp
Those shrimp will need to be fed regularly. They are nowhere as easy to keep as the Opaes. They also need heat and a sponge type filter. Good luck. I failed miserably at keeping them. I bought about 35-40 over a year's period. None lived longer than 90 days and they never bred. The blue ones did see...

Re: Fish? + babies?
Those are Celestial Pearl Danios. Very nice fish but yes, they would readily eat shrimplets. If the fish were kept well fed and the shrimplets had adequate places to hide in, some could survive.

That's exactly what it is. He was just well fed.

They are grazing on the shells just like they graze on everything.

Re: snails & a few other newb inquiries
The female will carry the eggs for about 6 weeks and then release the larvae. They will take another 4 weeks to become full fledged shrimp.

Re: Molt!
I've seen quite a few molts and have even observed 2 shrimp in the act of doing it. I haven't seen a molt now though for about 3 months. I think because there are now so many shrimp, the molts get immediately consumed.

Re: Population Explosion!
It may also depend on food availability. Maybe , in my case, the biofilm and algae might grow faster at the higher temps. Or a longer period of daylight may affect them. Who knows? I can only go by what I have seen. I don't use a light timer on my tank so the light goes on and off whenever i do it w...

Re: Population Explosion!
Or, maybe 78-82F which is 26-28C is the ideal temp range for breeding. Warmer or cooler and they slow down or stop. That's my theory.
