Re: Just getting started

Super cute tank!
I wanted to mention that my moss ball has been the gift that keeps on giving. It didn’t look like much when it arrived but over the months I’ve divided it several times and have given a few mini balls to my kids for their tanks. I probably have 10 tiny balls in my tank now.

Photos of opae ula in Hawaiian anchialine pool

My sister lives on the Big Island and does a lot of beach cleanups. She recently sent me photos of opae ulas in an anchialine pool, so I thought I'd share.

Re: Pale anxious shrimp ):

My shrimp become pale and swim around anything there is any sort of disturbance in the tank. They get back to normally within hours, usually. I wouldn't worry.

Re: First Time Shrimping

They look nice! Maybe add a small pile of stones or shells to the top one so the shrimp have more nooks and crannies to hang out in (or you can break up the big lava rock into a few pieces and stack them). I know that mine often like to get away from the direct light.

I like your tank. It looks like there are a lot of interesting nooks and crannies for your shrimp to explore. Enjoy!

Re: Help! Inexperienced shrimp owner

I don't know what the crawling critters are, but I wanted to say that one thing you can do right now is to very slowly and carefully turn the ecosphere upside down and pry out the stopper. This will allow the gas to exchange, which should help the surviving shrimp a lot. You can also put a tiny spec...

Re: 5 Gallon tank sought

I have this one. It's worked well because it has a lid to minimize evaporation while allowing gas exchange. I know you don't want the side panel thingee, but I just left the filter out and the shrimp love to go into that space through the vent holes. It's always dark in there, so they can chillax an...

Question about seashells/calcium carbonate/PH balancing

I use eggshells in my tank as a source of calcium carbonate to buffer the water, but I also have seashells in there and I'm wondering if they also do the job since they consist mainly of calcium carbonate. In the tank set up section of this website I see that Mustafa mentions limestone and coral as ...

Re: My new 1g jar and some questions!

Congrats on your new tank! It's great the shrimp are doing well. I'm sure they will appreciate it when you make a little rock mountain for them because they love to be able to hide and get away from light, and that will reduce their stress and maybe make them more apt to breed. I don't know about th...

Re: Shy lil things

They do eat the brown algae; I wouldn't feed them anything for months and months. The film is biofilm, which is a good thing--no need to remove it. They'll probably eventually clean up the tank, especially if they start making babies and the population increases (maybe in the spring you'll get a ber...

Re: 2-gallon setup

Looks nice!

I echo the suggestion about piling up some lava rocks. I've seen that the shrimp really appreciate being able to get under or into something to fully hide. They'll have less stress and, who knows, maybe that will result in more breeding!

New 2.5 gallon jar tank

My 24-year-old son is moving into his own apartment and I've been cycling this big jar to be a portable shrimp tank for him. I've got a color-changing LED light in the lid so he can give it some atmosphere when he wants. I'm starting to see algae, and about 25 shrimp from my own tank will be living ...
