Re: "Planted" supershrimp tank

Thanks for this info... I will be looking into some of these further... Some more pics of your tank would be great too!

Re: "Planted" supershrimp tank

Awesome! You've been waiting a long time... How are the plants in your tank surviving? I would love to learn more about how you set up a planted tank. Can you provide more details about substrate and species used and if they survived the transition from fresh to brackish water? :D

Re: Nanosphere 9

Ace, would you mind sharing where you acquire the spheres? and what size is your Nanosphere9? Also, how did you get the pumice to sink? Doesn't it naturally float?

Re: A new home for old shrimp

i wouldn't add veggies for your nerite, if it is spending more time on the waterline chances are there is something going on with the water quality. The more food you add the more likely you are to have water quality issues, especially with such a small water volume. I think Jenny is right, wait it ...

Re: Thoughts on Nerite Snails

Nerites won't really "help" cycling, most of them like to eat surface algae which is what you're trying to establish and will inevitably add "waste" to the tank which does produce ammonia. The trumpet snails from Mustafa will eat surface algae off the glass of your tank too but w...

Re: Supershrimp Mossballs vs. Marimo Balls

I have a Mustafa moss ball that is growing in the tank with Mustafas macroalgae... I separated the one ball I purchased into two balls. It was already naturally forming into two balls at the time. One got eaten (since apparently crabs will eat the moss ball, maybe it was the snails, who knows...), b...

Re: Why the cycling fuss !?

Would macroalgae and an algaeball in the tank be enough food for them until more algae develops on the rest of the tank? The shrimp don't actually feed on the macroalgae or the mossballs. They eat algae that grows on it's surface... there is likely enough algae growing on them when you get it from ...

Re: Why the cycling fuss !?

i'm just gonna add... Dr. Tim's One and Only Live Nitrifying Bacteria,(http://www.drtimsaquatics.com/treat-aquarium-nitrite-ammonia-levels) is in my opinion, the best stuff to add for tank cycling. It is usually stored refrigerated and should be kept cool. I used it in my second tank and in two week...

Re: Pyrite Toxic to Supershrimp?

Ace wrote:Salt water destroys metals very quickly.
While there is truth in this statement, many of us have lava in our tanks. In addition to silicates, lava compositions in most cases contain metals, e.g. aluminum, iron, magnesium.

Re: Pyrite Toxic to Supershrimp?

Not sure about how the shrimp will react to pyrite but for the sake of identifying the "golden glitter" we'd need pictures to at least help. The existence of gold and pyrite in lava is rare but can occur. Try scratching the surface of the gold colored mineral with a needle. If the needle m...

Re: Supershrimp Mossballs vs. Marimo Balls

Yes, where this species (Marimo balls) does form balls it seems like wave action rolls the balls around so they maintain their ball shape. And that's *exactly* what isn't needed with the Supershrimp Mossballs. They bud tiny pieces after a while which then grow into balls shapes over time. Basically...

Re: Supershrimp Mossballs vs. Marimo Balls

Thanks for this info Mustafa. I also seem to remember reading somewhere that Marimos exist in places where tidal or other natural currents actually break the moss blankets free and they roll around daily and that's how they form into balls. Even the directions for keeping a Marimo suggest that you r...

Re: Where to order supplies?

I found my lava rock and corals on etsy and ebay respectively. I believe the seller of my lava rocks was based in New Mexico and the corals I got from the some guy in Florida... There are plenty of purveyors of these items on both of these sites. Be careful though and make sure you research the sell...

Re: Too much algae!!

I'd get a few Zebra Horned Nerites, they are quite voracious and will clean the glass. My experience is that they like prefer the glass and the trumpet snails prefer the substrate so having both works well. The Zebra Horned nerites also stay smaller than their relatives but in a five gallon you prob...
