Re: New journey and questions
I've never tried to replace substrate with the shrimp in the tank before, so the following is far from expert advice, but given the likely alternative of more shrimp dying, it seems better to do something. To minimize stress and the risk of scooping out shrimp, you'd probably want to use a relativel...

Re: New journey and questions
thank you for the replies guys. Yes this is soil for aquarium plants, but I have seen quite many people using this type of soil for their tanks here and there in this forum, so I figured it is OK anyway. I'm curious just where on this forum you've seen tanks using aquarium soil for supershrimp? I c...

Re: Question for Owners with Older Tanks
It's been about two years now since I moved my original colony to a 20 gallon tank, and the amount of organic matter you start with really impacts how the tank ends up looking. Namely my original supershrimp tank stayed quite clean looking for years (not counting the macroalgae in it falling apart),...

Re: New journey and questions
It may be too late to change things, but I have to ask just what the "aquarium soil" you used is? These guys typically do best with inert sand or rock, those shrimp "soils" (if this is one) to my knowledge are made for freshwater shrimp and may do unwanted things to water intende...

Re: cycling issues
That said the "swimming around like crazy" activity normally means a female has become receptive and the males are frantically trying to find her. They notice she's near by her scent.

Re: Evaporation and Adding Water
Basically the salt that started in the water is going to stay there, so there shouldn't ever be a need to add more. Unlike water the salt doesn't evaporate.

Re: 4 gallon Bio Orb Crystal Looking Ball
Remove the biofilm on the surface? No need, the shrimp like to graze on it.

Re: Attempt #1 = Fail :(
Indeed, it's also important to consider that the smaller the tank is the easier it is for something to go wrong. Dilution is one of a aquatic animal keeper's greatest allies.

Yes, those are molts. Dead shrimp don't turn transparent.

Re: No visible algae?
If the snails have been in the tank for some time without issue, then it should be safe by now to add the shrimp. Visible algae is an easy way to tell the tank is ready, but not the only way. In your case the biofilm that's growing may just be invisible to the naked eye (and the macroalgae may be ta...

Re: No visible algae?
You could try ordering some snails and/or moss balls from the site, they would likely come with some algae in the water which you can add to the tank when adding them.

Did you see the bodies? If not then its possible some of them are just hiding. Acclimation normally isn't needed for these guys.

Re: Snail shell discoloration
Shell coloration can vary, and its normal for algae to grow on them if conditions allow for it. If they were low on calcium then the shell could become pitted, fragmented and broken on the end, etc.

Re: Starting out / Mason Jar Tank
From what I've heard once they reach a certain population density the shrimp will stop reproducing. However, other than making sure you only have males or only have females, I don't think there is a way to make them not reproduce at all if the shrimp aren't at that density. Speeding through cycling ...
