Re: All larvae die. HELP

if your PH is so low that means you have no buffer, what are you using to do this?

once ammonia is zero you need to make sure your Nitrites are zero too.

Re: All larvae die. HELP

The one test that will make it obvious if your tank has cycled is when your ammonia drops and the nitrites shoots up high then drops off to zero.. You will end up with nitrates but as shrimp don't produce much waste you may only get trace amounts showing. Keep an eye on that nitrite level when it sp...

Re: Progress updates

If you have a cycled tank, ammonia is instantly turned into nitrites, this then gets turned into nitrates by friendly bacteria. If you have ammonia then you have not gotten a cycled tank, if you are over feeding or something decaying and nitrates are not increasing then the nitrogen cycle isn't doin...

Re: Progress updates

if you are prepared to keep the ammonia levels down and let the tank cycle then you wont have to worry about over feeding ever again, just monitor nitrates :)

you can do water changes to reduce ammonia.

Re: New tank set up

Test the tank water every few days, when your ammonia drops, nitrites shoot up and then drop to zero on their own and you have algae growing put some shrimp in.

Re: New tank set up

Stirring up some organic matter seems possible. It should be noted though that if you are using those test strips then they aren't always the most accurate things (you want the liquid test kits for that, they don't cost much more if you're just getting ones for ammonia, and are more accurate). I'd ...

Re: New tank set up

You would be better getting the saltwater test kit to be honest, your tank will always have ammonia but when the cycle is complete it will be constantly and instantly eaten up and made into something less toxic by friendly Bactria. Until all is established nothing is there to remove the ammonia. Let...

Re: Question about snails

If it hasn't moved in days and days, take it out and put it in some pure water, if it still doesn't move then it's dead.

Yea, adding that will speed it up, it will come with some bacteria on it and an ammonia source.

Re: New tank set up

Thanks Mech. I'm going to keep a close watch on the parameters. To put it simply any tank with living things in it is producing ammonia, its just that in a cycled tank that ammonia usually gets eaten so quickly by the good bacteria that the water test readings will show zero ammonia. This man is co...

Re: All larvae die. HELP

Every day your water will be getting healthier as the cycle is starting, you may be lucky and pleasantly surprised at these larvae :) Keep us updated, and don't worry about removing water and worrying about loosing your healthy bacteria... Most of it lives in your substrate. Edit: you could always e...
