Re: New tank - Q about cycling and changing decor

When cycling my tank, I did add a couple of tiny shrimp wafers and placed the tank in direct sunlight. But once you see algae growth, move it to indirect sunlight. Since I don't use any artificial light source, the direct sunlight seemed to speed the cycling process.

Re: 1/4 gallon tank - OK for 10 shrimp?

I'm not sure with a 1/4th gallon. I personally would go with a minimum of 1/2 gallon. I have read that 1/2 gallon is around the smallest size where they will reproduce. Although they live a long time, I like the idea of keeping the population going from one generation to the next.

Re: Q about Food

I feed mine these shrimp wafers I bought on Amazon. Just one tiny wafer maybe once a month or less depending on if you have algae growth. They seem to love them. It takes them about 10 minutes to find it floating on the surface. Then they pull it down to the bottom and a feeding frenzy begins! After...

Re: Help

For 10 shrimp, select a container that is 1/2 gallon or larger. You need a source of calcium carbonate. Aragonite sand works well. Add about 1/2 to 1 inch sand to your tank. You can also add sea shells for calcium carbonate. You do not need to float the bag in your tank before releasing your shrimp ...

Re: Algae buildup on tank glass

fullsizeoutput_4e4.jpeg fullsizeoutput_4e9.jpeg fullsizeoutput_4dc.jpeg It has been over 3 months since I have feed any outside food at all. The shrimp seem fine. My 1.5 gallon tank has around 20 shrimp. There is still a lot of algae growth on the right wall of the tank. It receives about 45 minute...

Re: Oxygen

I would suggest to leave it closed. Just open it maybe once a week or once every two weeks to allow for some air exchange. These shrimp do well in a low oxygen environment. Also, algae growth will release some oxygen into the water. When you notice the water level has dropped by around 10% due to ev...

Re: Ecosphere Empathy

WOW! I have read that the shrimp do shrink over time in ecospheres. Every time they molt, they get smaller due to lack of food. He's probebly very hungry and happy to be back amoung the living!

Re: Ecospheres

Thanks Mustafa! As of today, it looks like that section in the wikipedia post on Ecospheres is still posted. It also stated this: "A further concern is that this shrimp’s sole habitat is shrinking, with over 90% of Hawaii’s anchialine pools having disappeared due to development" That's ala...

Re: Digging into 'ecosphere' claims

I think your idea of a prepackaged sustainable Opae Ula Kit is a great idea! Possibly a 1/2 gallon tank with lid. Inside, a package of crushed coral, some sea shells, a sea fan and a premeasured amount of marine salt along with a certificate to receive say 10 shrimp. On the downside, people these da...

Algae buildup on tank glass

Hi. I'm really starting to get a lot of algae growth on the glass of my tank. It's starting to become difficult to see them. What is the best way to clean this?

Congratulations on your berried shrimp! They must be happy shrimp or they would not reproduce as they have. Also, that macro algae has really grown!

Limited Full Sunlight

fullsizeoutput_47d.jpeg Hi everyone! My 1.5 gallon shrimp tank is getting direct sunlight every morning for about 45 minutes before the sun shifts and then it receives indirect sunlight for the rest of the day. I have no artificial light on my tank. I think it has actually helped my algae growth an...

Re: Algea growth but high nitrates

Algae growth generally means your tank has cycled. Varanus is correct. Those test strips are not always accurate. I would think it is safe to put your shrimp in their new home.
