Re: My Nano Tank Set Up Success Story
Thank you, Varanus, for your response. You know a lot about OU and I value your input. I'm going to keep my new tank as an enclosed system outside in full sun for a week to see if I find visual algae growth. Will keep you all posted.

Re: My Nano Tank Set Up Success Story
Hi Everyone! I am trying something. I have been cycling a new 1.5 gallon tank for 6 weeks now. I initially added 1 cup of water from my current tank and a few shrimp food pellets to kick start the process. After two weeks the ammonia level was 1.0. After 5 weeks the ammonia level was at 0.5 with 0% ...

Re: My Nano Tank Set Up Success Story
Also, I'm in the process of cycling a new tank. It is identical to my original tank except it is twice the size. I will be going from 3/4 gallon to 1.5 gallon. This time I'm using aragonite sand instead of crushed coral. I also added a black lava rock and some shells. I added one cup of water from m...

Re: Ecosphere Empathy
I have an Anchor Hocking Jar that I bought on Amazon.com. They come in sizes ranging from 1/2 gallon up to 2 1/2 gallons. The handle on top of the lid can be easily unscrewed to create a small air hole. Mine is 96 ounces or 3/4th gallon. It does magnify the shrimp. I also bought a magnifying glass t...

Re: Ecosphere Empathy
Sounds like you're doing great! I would cut back on the feeding to just one pellet every 4 weeks. Your tank seems established by now. Overfeeding can cause problems. They require very little outside food, since they mainly eat the algae and microorganisms that occur naturally inside their tank. You ...

Plastic Plants
Hi Everyone! I have a plastic plant in my 3/4th gallon tank. It is sold as a decoration specifically for aquariums. It's been a year, and all of my shrimp are doing well. My question is, will this plastic plant begin to biodegrade over time and possibly harm the shrimp? I have no filter. I do no wat...

Re: Ecosphere Empathy
From what I have read on this site, 1/2 gallon or larger, they will reproduce. Mine have not yet. It's only been 1 year for me. Hurry up and wait when it comes to Opae Ula! But they live for 20 yrs! As long as you give them the small amount of care they require, I'm pretty sure it will eventually ha...

Re: Ecosphere Empathy
Thank you for giving these amazing little creatures a better life! I did the same thing. I purchased a smaller ecosphere with 4 shrimp before I knew these things were actually cruel and shortened their life from around 20 yrs to only 2 yrs. I ended up buying 10 more shrimp from this site, and now, a...

Re: My Nano Tank Set Up Success Story
Hi All! I have a question. My nano tank contains a plastic plant which is sold for aquarium use. Are plastic plants safe long term? Will the plastic degrade over time causing harm to the shrimp? Should I maybe replace it with rocks or something else? Right now, the shrimp seem fine.

Re: My tank setup
Hi. You asked how much salt to use. You need brackish water with about 1/2 the salinity of ocean water. I used "instant ocean" brand salt. The box said to use 1/2 cup per gallon water to make ocean water, so I cut that in half and used 1/4 cup salt for 1 gallon of distilled water.

Re: Supershrimp Mossballs vs. Marimo Balls
Hi! I actually have 5 marimo balls which I keep in a 1 gallon fish bowl in fresh tap water that is changed every two weeks. I don't think they would do well in brackish or ocean water. In nature, they are only found in fresh water lakes in Japan, Estonia, Iceland, Scotland and Australia.

Re: My Nano Tank Set Up Success Story
Thanks for the advise, and yes the tank I have is an Anchor Hocking Montana Storage Jar, Glass, 96-Ounce. They come in a wide range of sizes from 1/2 gallon up to 2 and 1/2 gallon. You can find them all on Amazon. And yes, you can very easily unscrew and remove the handle to make a small air hole. I...
