is there a maximum stocking density at which cherry shrip will stop reproducing due to over crowding

There is no set number. It all depends on your water quality which depends on how often you perform water changes and how big your tank is. If the water quality goes down the drain (i.e. high dissolved organics, nitrate etc.), then the shrimp won't only stop reproducing, but will also start dying. The dying actually starts before you stop seeing egg carrying females running around. This is kinda of tricky with shrimp, as shrimp can show a delayed adverse reaction to bad water. Whatever causes them to die seem to build up in them over time. Just my observations.
