Parasite?

Post by Jojoyojimbi »

Ok, first off, I did search for you forum nazis out there and I couldn't find an answer so I'm asking:

Are there any known types of parasitic worms that would infect a 'ghost shrimp' from the big box retailers that would appear as a white worm coiled up within their endoskeleton?

I bought some berried females from their tank because I didn't want the eggs to end up as fish food so the three of them are in my 2.5 nano with a feeder guppy less than a cm long that made it into the bag, and a female guppy that was in there, and the two clutches of 1-2mm giant columbian ramshorns snails.

however the 4th, big male i got has what appears to be a white line inside his body which is clearly opaque compared to how see-through he is and I'm concerned that the 'line' might be some sort of shrimp tapeworm or parasitic nematode?

I put him into my 55 so he's the only shrimp in the tank with a few rasboras and some barbs, if he's not 'infected' then i can easily fish him out since I haven't planted my 55 yet

so, coiled up white line, parasite, or weird coloration?

We could do without that sort of thing. Rules are rules. You are new here, so don't think you have "freedom of speech" or some other right to insult the members here. Few things set Mustafa off like that sort of thing, so be advised.

As to your question, so to the shrimp varieties page and get an ID for your ghost shrimp. I'm guessing it is Palaemonetes paludosus. If so, they can have worms, and it doesn't seem to kill them. I had one for close to a year with that in their gut. If the shrimp is large relative to the other berried females than it is a female. The males are about half the size of the females at full growth.

Several members here, including myself, have raised these from eggs, so check out those threads and enjoy the info.

First off man, any user on any forum I've ever been on that says 'use search' instead of just answering a question is a search nazi, and there are a couple of them on this site, and no matter how new I am shouldn't matter I've been reading the site regularly since well before the article brought all the new people to the boards

Had I wanted to read all of the old threads pertaining to ghost shrimp, wading through all of the old posts just to find out if anyone had ever seen these parasites in them before I would have done that. It's faster to ask, thanks.

The rules are in place to stop lazy people who can't be bothered finding information on their own shrimp who expect other people to do their research for them.

You have no idea how many times the same questions have been asked over and over even though the information is in the shrimp varieties page or found through a search on this site or the web.

It's faster to ask and it's a faster way to get yourself banned with an attitude like that.

This is a very different forum than most out there on the internet that consist of thousands of repetitive discussions of frequently asked questions posted by people who think it is faster to ask.

Instead, this forum is intended to be one in which each thread generally covers a new topic so that it becomes a repository of high quality useful information based on significant experience and scientific knowledge. As a biologist and hobbyist shimpkeeper, this forum is the only one I know of that is like this and I am one who appreciates this format.

Wading through all the old posts and spending some significant time reading the old threads is most useful here, particularly because there is not a lot of repetition. Someone who is seriously interested in keeping a particular shrimp species SHOULD go back and read everything they can on the subject. Not only might you find the answer to your question of the day, but you will find answers to questions you haven't even considered but should.

NOBODY calls a any of my forum members a "Nazi" or any other insults here! This alone will get you banned. No exceptions.

Laziness is another "great" way to get yourself banned from this forum. There is no reason why other people should do your most basic research. "It's faster to ask" is a typical lazy person's excuse.

Anyway, this person has been banned from this forum. Thanks to all of you for enforcing the rules and keeping the community focused on its goals by "reminding" people that there *are* rules to be followed.
