This morning i woke up and found a dead cherry shrimp laying in my moss..all the others seem to be doing fine and eating and i have many cherry shrimp with eggs also with 6 CRS in the tank. None that i see of are swimming around wildy am a bit confused all seem to be acting normal. Last night i did a 20-30% water change and then woke up and found this . I use 100% pure R/O since im trying to lower PH for my water changes and I use sponge filter only like the hydro sponge and am using DIY CO2 which i just started 2 days ago.
My water parameters are:
PH = 7.8 ish
KH = 3dKH (50mg/l)
GH = 2-3 dGH (40-60)
Ammonia = 0
NO2 = 0
Temperature = 24-25 C
Sorry to here about the loss. Do you know about how old the shrimp was? If an adult, it might have been due to old age or to stress it received before it came to you. If the others are doing well then the tank may not be the problem. Best wishes and keep us informed.
from what i read in the forum i think your pH is optimal for cherries
could the 20% water change lower the pH? i know the pH in bc tap water is 6.8ish...and the water change could have severely affected your pH
How are you diffusing the CO2? If you keep diffusing while the lights are off, the CO2 levels could get pretty high. That's probably not the problem though, since only one died.
Hm another one died. I dont think its of old age i got them about 2 weeks ago
and just now started noticing deaths..count: 2. My tap water here is 7.5+ so thats why i use R/O water for my 20-30% water changes the PH of the R/O water is 6.5 but after about 4+ water changes my PH seems to stay high..around 7.5+ no lower and havnt noticed any drop in PH. I use a airstone to diffuse the CO2 with 1 2L soda bottle and gas seperator and check valve i leave on 24/7 but i doubt that its to much CO2 because my method shouldnt produce to much and others have told me it shouldnt worry about it.
Everything else seems to be right with my water other then a little high for PH ..but cherries shouldnt mind that high of a PH..should be more my CRS that should be dying if anything and even them should be able to live under my water conditions..I think i will take out the DIY co2 since i just noticed deaths a day or 2 after putting it on and see how everything goes once its off...everything was going good till now
AHHH i just noticed another dead one this ones a CRS maybe the other 2 were CRS and its just a little hard to tell cus they go all pale but this one i just noticed is for sure a CRS grr.. must be the PH? could it be that whenever i do water changes and use 100% R/O to change 20-30% that the PH swings?
and this causes the stress. I have done 2 water changes before since i got them and none died then just now i see deaths from CRS..If i use tap water for my water changes and use dechlorinator then my PH will still stay high. So confused
How long has the tank been going? How much do you feed them?
Give us some history.
This sounds like some sort of poisoning. Any sort of objects inthe tank? Are you using any fertilizers?
i believe its the co2 mixed w/ your water change. i used to have a diy co2 and lets just say the bubbles is very unpredictable. sometimes there are lots of bubbles other times it pauses. that could very cause a pH swing overnight when o2 levels are low also.
Hey guys, well last night i took out the CO2. This morning i see no deaths. I dont use any fertilizers or anything thing in the tank that could poison them only driftwood and mosses/plants. I do believe your correct Mustafa i also think its the PH and ive been trying to lower it to atleast 7.0 but its always 7.5+ and never drops..it hasnt dropped over the past month. The tank id have to say has been running about a month but i used lots of water from a tank that had been running for a while before that plus a sponge filter which was used. Ammonia, NO2, NO3 is all 0. I feed them every second or third da y a little piece of algae waffer and a pellet of crab cuisine. I have im guessing 30 shrimp in there and i always make sure its just enough food in there so they eat it in a couple hours not sure if this is to less food? i dont have all that much algae in the tank but im sure its almost impossible to starve them. Im still trying to think of how else I could lower the PH..100% pure R/O (PH 6.5) doesnt seem to lower it when i do 20-30 % W/C every week I just hope none die anymore count:3. Thanks for the help guys if anyone else would have another good way to reduce PH or any other ideas id love to hear them.
