Hi Mustafa and everyone,
Has anyone tried to use tofu to feed their shrimps? If so, any results (good, bad, okay)? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.
I'm sure they'll try it at least, since Tofu is basically just soybeans. But of course just as a once in a while treat. A good quality commercial dry food (flakes, pelletst etc.) combined with leaves in the tank should be the staple for dwarf shrimp. Macrobrachium will do fine with just the commercial food, plus some live or freeze-dried treats once in a while if you really want to.
Thank you Mustafa...I was just wondering about that for a long time now...when I feed them, I will only feed them a little bit...
After all, I want to share with my shrimps my Asian culture and especially our Asian cuisine!!!

That could be dangerous for them as seafood is a large part of asian cuisine
Yesterday I finally tested the "TOFU" experiment. I placed a very small piece of organic tofu to all of my shrimp tanks. Tofu was a big hit in the snowball/green shrimp tank. There were feasting on it within seconds. I took the tofu out after 15 minutes later. With my CRS and Tiger shrimps, they never even came close to the tofu. So I gave up that idea for them after 5 minutes later. However, I placed a couple flakes of fish food to the CRS/Tiger shrimp tank 2 hours later, and they munched on it like there is no tomorrow. So that is the result of the "TOFU" experiment. Use it at your own precaution.
I had thought about Tofu in the past. I thought it would be a good calcium source.
Then I found an article on internet. It talked about how Tofu is made today. The article said: only the Tofu made in traditional method contains a lot of calcium. Many brands of Tofu made today contain little or no calcium.
Actually, tofu has calcium or magnesium (or both) in them. The organic tofu usually have around 2% to 4% calcium in it. 2% of calcium is around
20 mg of calcium so actually it is quiet high. Even if the shrimps are only eating a tiny bite of that tofu, that is still at least several micro-grams of calcium inside their body which is well enough for their diet and development of their exoskelelton. The hardening agent or coagulant for tofu is actually magnesium choloride or calcium chloride both of which is a good source for shrimps to develop their exoskelteon. If I am wrong about this, then I apologize and please correct me. My hypothesis is that the hard water species of shrimp such as Neocaridina sp. and certain Caridina sp. (such as the Green shrimp) likes tofu because of tofu's certain "strong smell" of calcium or magnesium chloride along with the concentrated soybean milk or puree. Meanwhile, the soft water species of shrimp such as Crystal Red shrimp, Tiger, Bumblebee, and others of similar kind do not like that because of that "strong smell". Again, that is just my hypothesis so please do not be offended.
