Shrimp IDs Please!

Post by AnneRiceBowl »

I may get some shrimp, but I want to ask you guys first. I haven't gotten permission to post pics by the photographer, so please PM me. They are labeled as Palaemonetes paludosus, but when I searched here and on Google, all I came up with were ghost shrimp. The shrimp in the pics do not look like the ghosts sold in the stores. Could these be the ones sold as ghost shrimp pverseas?

Hi Anne,

I believe these are ghost shrimp. They have the classic body shape of the ghost/glass shrimp. These shrimp have different patterns and coloration due to sobstrate, mood and nutrition. The green in the gut of the shrimp in the second picture most likely is due to whatever they were feeding on (If they were eating carrots they would have orange coloration). They also appear to have cloudy/milky bodies which is a sign of stress or illness :(

The person that has them right now says that they are from Hong Kong. I'm not sure, but I have already decided to not get any.

If they are from Hong Kong they are most likely Macrobrachium lanchesteri or a related species. Those are called "ghost shrimp" in Asia and are also exported to Europe under that name (or as "glass shrimp").
