When the r/o unit arrives and I have another tank set up, I'll be adding some soft-water species to my collection as well.
What is the substrate in the tank? It looks rather deep for a shrimp setup. I've found that it's a good idea to stir my (thinner layer) of substrate when I do partials to release the gas bubbles that form. Apparently the MTS aren't enough to keep it aerated. I almost wish I had used a UG filter to prevent that situation.
The substrate is caribsea tahitian moon black sand, it looks great and the grains are larger which helps with the gas bubble problems. The sand pictured in my tank is actually 1/2" deep at the deepest parts and 1/3" deep at most areas.
I still buy my R/O water from a local vending machine and continue to have good results Please let me know how your unit works for you. If you get the same results plus the convenience, that might be worth the investment

I figure the r/o unit will be a handy addition. Aside from the soft water, the waste water will be perfect for my African cichlid tanks. Incidentally, there isn't anywhere locally that I know of to buy r/o water. That isn't a bad way to go for a single smaller tank if it's available, but convenience aside, having your own unit is more cost-effective in the long run.
