Hi Rick

If you look at the Shrimp Varieties page under RCS the First picture is a very good example of a Female and the third picture is a very good example of a Male.

Comparing the 2 body shape will help you be able to identify the differences.

Thanks all, I think I got the male, female parts down now..The main thing I think to look at is to see if the females "skirt" hangs down even or below her swimmerettes, I'm still now sure of what the saddle looks like becuse when they eat it make a spot behind there head and down there digestive track that looks a lot like what I think they should look like...Any comments on my thoughts on sexing shrimp??

I've been reading the shrimp threads backwards from last page forward reading all the subjects and picking the ones that sound interesting and pertain to what I'm doing...BUT I HATE LATIN...lol. One of them talked about drift wood in a tank that made her shrimp act weird. I've had an old piece of driftwood for years and just cut it in two to make two of them and when I did I boiled it for four hours changing the water every hour, Now it's soaking in my outdoor tank with nothing in it for a week now. I don't know what kind of wood it is..Do you think it's safe for a shrimp tank now?...Also, does the driftwood grow the same organisms as the leaf litter?

Well I counted and transfered 21 baby shrimps into my adult tank a little bit ago and all looks well with them...there swimming and acting normal. There old tank is getting a extreme make over...lol...I bought some black sand for the bottom and I'm going rock hounding tomorrow to a near by stream to get some smooth rocks about 2-4" to make a small 4"mound along the back wall with java ferns and moss peaking out from between the stone. I'll cycle this tank with the lights on 24/7 to jump start there growth...This will be my nursery for my expecting mothers...without any mature males it'll have a while to age and grow.

Well I got 40 more back pages of this forum to read so bye for now,
Rick

If you have baby shrimp, no worries. Just hang in there and let us know what works for you. For me, less is better, just keep up wit the water changes and a quality water conditioner.

Hey everyone, I think I got it!! I can tell the difference between the males and females. My juvenile RCS are maturing enough now that I can see the saddles on the females. There are still some I think are to small to sex but I think I got about 12 females and 5 males. Hopefully I'll be over run by them soon. :-D There molting left and right getting bigger and bigger. I love watching them.

I also found an other berried ghost shrimp in my 16 bow front. So now she's in my 20H that was going to be my RCS nursery, but now it's a Pediatric tank...lol. she had the eggs on the tenth...My other one in my swap water tank I'm not sure wen she berried up but there turning dark in color. How long for eggs to germinate in 75 degree water..20 to 30 days??

I also scored big asking for fish tanks and accessories at a site called freecycle. org It's a site where ppl give things away that would ordenarily get sent to the land fill. I got a 55G complete with wood stand, lighted wood hood, filters, air pumps, plastic plants and a professional water testing kit. I can't wait to set it up...This will be my CRS tank so I want to get it up and cycled properly before I order them. If your low on cash and need equipment check that site out.

What's the proper thing to do with all the shrimp feces I'm finding on the bottom of my 20H with the black marine sand? He just seems to keep pilling it up...lol Should I vacuum it up with my water changes or let it sit and let the tank cycle it up? I'm thinking vacuum cuss when I get babbies in there I'd have to buy them all boots...thanks alotta feet too...lol

OK...Is it a personal preference or is sand better than gravel..and if gravel, which gravel..course or fine. This is a survey so please let me know.

I hope that suzie and everyones having some luck with their shrimp moltings as I haven't seen any complications with mine yet...KNOCK KNOCK.

I too have started to write down notes to go back to and see all my rights and wrongs so I can improve what I'm learning and breed better shrimp.

Bye for now...hear from ya soon.
