Post by PufferFan »

I read the rules and what not and i read all the FAQ. I just set up a 6.6 gallon "bookshelf aquarium" its 24" long and i believe 9" thick it is a bow front. i plan on planting java moss and java fern. and if i where to make this a shrimp tank they would be RCS and i just wanted to know...

are shrimp fun? are they entertaining can you sit and watch them and not get bored? i have dwarf puffers and i love to watch them hunt and play they have such big personality's... i love the idea of a shrimp tank as long as its not boring...

what kind of fish can i put in with the shrimp in this tank?

heres pics and thank you.

I can only tell you about my experiences with shrimp. They are entertaining in a way that watching a discovery channel program about animals you are not familiar with would entertain you. They will not dance or play games but they will swim around, graze and hide. They look great and that is their major appeal.

Just about any fish you keep with dwarf shrimp will eat the shrimp babies. The only safe fish I think are ottos.

Your tank looks nice and with the java plants it would look even better :)

The fish will eat the babies they can get to. So if you have moss it will give the baby shrimp places to hide and they will survive. Best wishes on the new tank and be sure to post up pictures when you get a chance.

I really like the contrast of the bright red RCS and the lush green plants.

I would not keep normal fish with dwarf shrimp. Java moss and java fern are the best plants and make an attractive tank. Brisle nosed blecos and ottos make good tank mates.

Dwarf crayfish are also fun. Yes, these are addictive, but get some glass cleaner. There will be nose marks on the glass before you know it

Shrimp are fascinating to watch. The way they gently glide around the aquarium, and crawl around on everything makes for a very "alien" looking scene. You will find they have a lot of personality too, I frequently find myself amused to the point of laughing out loud at some of their antics. They can get really spastic, especially during feeding time, as they swim around looking for the food, legs flailing all over the place...
