Orange Shrimp

Post by garfieldnfish »

I just bought 5 orange shrimp. I asked for a mixed group and got 5 orange and one almost clear one. I was told the females are less orange in color. This is my first time having any neocard. species, so I am a bit "dumb" in this regard. Would the clear one be the female or may another type shrimp (ghost shrimp) have hitched a ride? I doubt that so as the lady I bought them from, is very knowledgable but she breeds many different shrimp species so anything is possible. I have only had the shrimp since Friday. Today, only 2 days later, I found one empty mold. All shrimp are doing fine and one of the former dark orange ones is now almost clear as well. I am guessing he was the one molding. Am I right there?
Also I put a bunch of dry brown leaves from one of my neighbors driveway in a bowl with water. This house has been vacant for 6 months so all lawn fertilizer would have washed off my now. The leaves from my yard are not safe. How long should I leave them in the water? I looked in the bowl today and the water had a lot of tannin in it. Do I have to wait until the water remains totally clear before adding them to the tank?
I also boiled some river birch branches for my dwarf frogs and clown pleco tank. The have been in their tank for months. Would it be a good idea to add a few of those branches to the shrimp tank until the leaves are ready? The bark on those branches is partly pealed of and the wood also partly consumed by the plecos but there is plenty of it left for 6 shrimp to graze on. Any help would greatly be appreciated. I really what these shrimp to make it.

Hi,

I have had more experience with this subject than with the others you mentioned. I would leave the leaves in the bowl and do daily water changes until the tannins no longer visibly leak. This may take a week or more. It helps to dilute the tannins and any other toxins on or in the leaves. Best wished with your tank and post some pictures when you get a chance.

I do not believe that the wood is needed.

The shrimp will not eat the wood.
The shrimp eat the micro-organism that grows on the wood.
So a couple of leaves added to your tank along with a cycled sponge filter will do just fine.

There is a fine line when adding leaves to your tank.

If you add to many leaves to your tank at one time, they will compete with the sponges bio-filtration.

And the " Orange " shrimp
They are, from what I understand. Not a Neocaridina Species.

Thanks for the replys. I added one birch branch, that had been in my frog tank and should have some stuff for them on it to eat as the leaves won't be ready for a few days.
I won't add more then a couple of leaves then.
The auction were I bought them did not specificially list them as neocaridina species but I did a google search and found this

They look like my shrimp.

Please delete the Link, it is against the forum rules.

That seller uses the same "auction posting" for any shrimp they sell and only changes the name and not the discription.

Good luck with the shrimp

garfieldnfish...from reading your posts it seems that you have not read the rules very thoroughly. I recommend going over them again as I take the rules very seriously to keep up the quality of this forum.

I already deleted your link to a commercial website selling these shrimp. Also, the "orange shrimp" has been discussed here quite a few times (with pictures and all). I urge you do the research on these shrimp (and research any other questions you have in mind *first*) before posting (e.g. I have no idea why you state that they are a Neocaridina sp. as if it's a fact). Speculation, hearsay and unfounded "facts" have no place on this website.

As the "survival requirements" for these shrimp is not any different from any other species of dwarf shrimp, reading all the information about shrimp keeping presented on this website over the years will be more helpful than anything else (and is actually one of the rules).
