Malaya with developing saddle!

Post by southerndesert »

Well my Malaya Shrimp are now at the right age to hopefully begin breeding and I noticed one of the females was beginning to develop a saddle! Or at least that is what it looks like to me...

Here is a photo of one of my males as well. In the process of growing back a leg. I suspect he may of possibly had a close call with one of the 2 Damselfly Nymphs in his previous tank....

These are really interesting shrimp and looking forward to seeing some little ones one of these days....

Hi Bill,

There may be a little something of a saddle in the first picture but the second one does not have a saddle yet. You can really tell when one is saddled because it is either a distinct egg mass right above the gut (GI) tract and just behind the head. The mass will be either white or dark depending on the coloration of the shrimp. There are plenty of pictures of saddled females on this forum :D

Still does't change the fact that it does not have a saddle

that is the truth, sir :-D

Wow, can crustaceans regenerate entire legs in one molt? Like what about the huge, beefy legs of vampire shrimp?
