Blue shrimp w/ GREEN ? on it

Post by adimeatatime »

I found this shrimp tonight when I was feeding them. The shrimp is very active and was feeding as you would expect. I saw the thread earlier with a similar looking issue. I'm going to watch this one and see it the green stuff is lost when the shrimp molts.

That's just really, really weird looking. Almost looks like he has moss growing out from under him...I suppose it must be some sort of fungus but it's certainly bizarre.

Bill (Southerndesert) had pictures of this same green growth on one of his Sulawesi shrimp. There is a thread about this particular green growth. Best to isolate this shrimp.

Hi Pat,

I had this with a Cardinal Shrimp a few months back as Arnold mentioned and after a time the shrimp was fine... I did isolate it to be safe.
Here is some discussion about it at this forum. I wish I'd have paid better attention, but I am guessing a molt cured it.

Thanks Bill, that is a relief. After I read some of the info I found it was kind of scary  and I sure didn't want to lose all of these guys.

Yes I sort of figured I would lose that shrimp, but it recovered and eventually I re-introduced it back into the colony and have not seen any more of this issue. Good luck with yours...

This is definitely a type of parasitic organism and *not* algae. Just wait it out...it should disappear after a molt, unless it weakens the shrimp so much that it dies before or right after a molt.
