Are clams good in a freshwater aquarium?

From personal experience, my clams did good when I fed my fish food that was too small for the fish. The food would be too heavy to stay in the water and settle down low. However! I have never been able to keep freshwater clams alive more than a year, thats why I won't aquire them anymore. They are VERY intresting though and always have me thinking about trying to keep them again and again.
