How long for red claw macros to hatch?

Post by demonte1997 »

I have a female who's been berried for somewhere around 35 days now. These babies should be hatching soon, right?

Yes, they will hatch relatively soon. Depending on the temperature it can take somewhere between 38 to way over 40 days.

Got home from a long day at work to find my berried female's carcass 2/3s eaten in the back corner of the tank.

To the best of my knowledge, she hadn't released any of the babies but I could be wrong. Seemed like close to 45 days had passed. At this point, I'm curious if anyone has ideas of what could have happened. My dad is pretty knowledgeable and thought it might have been one of two things: Possibly she died from malnurishment or maybe she had an issue because she didn't shed in such a long time. Admittedly, I didn't feed the tank that heavy over the time while she was berried. She was almost always hiding in a piece of driftwood. Maybe once a week she would come out to feed but even then it wasn't much. Should I have made a better effort at making sure she gets food? These red claw macros eat WAY slow compared to my other prawn. I don't want to ruin water quality by having uneaten food sitting on the bottom.

As a sidenote: There are also a bunch of red cherry shrimp in the tank and one japonica (not that I think they would have disturbed the macros but they do share in the eating responsibilities).

I also wonder if she was too young to have babies. She was only a few months old and maybe 1.5" in length. Seemed kind of small to me.

At this point, I have two definite males, a female and two runts. Becoming familiar with prawn social hierarchies, it would appear that my two runts are most likely males.

I'm hoping to not have this unfortunate situation happen again in the future, so if anyone can shed some light, I'd be much obliged.
