Slate instead of substrate?

Post by sushisnake »

Hi all. I'm new to the forum and to shrimp keeping. I've read a lot on the forum about substrate and have noted that little or none at all is recommended. Would moss on slate work? I'm thinking flame moss. I'm going for a low light tank- anubias, maybe java ferns, maybe crypts in pots- maybe not crypts in pots because they need root tabs. I'll be using an Eden 501 with Seachem Matrix media and a sponge filter over the intake. Tank is 5 gallons. I'm planning to keep cherries. I'd welcome your opinions.

Moss on slate works as long as the moss grows...otherwise the rotting moss becomes just organic pollution...same applies to all other plants. With shrimp, the simpler you keep your setup, the better.
