Buffer sources?

Post by phlox »

Hi all,

Where did y'all get your buffers? I'm a little scared to try the aragonite sand for fear of ammonia, but the fish stores I've been to have no shells or dead coral. Do you know of any reputable sources for dead corals or aquarium safe shells? Would love to get something attractive but don't want to buy from anybody that goes around destroying reefs/habitats (learning from my ecosphere mistake.) I have a few shells from the beach, but the barnacle has rust on the bottom and the others aren't enough.

Thanks!

Petsmart sells five-pound bags of fossilized reef rock - ie: rock deposits from what used to be a coral reef millions of years ago. I use that in my tanks. Some folks use crushed eggshells, and cuttlebone would also work. The rocks are really dense, but kinda attractive.
