Let's talk tanks! What do you have in your tanks?

Post by Carolina »

Hi :smt006
Just curious about everyone's setup
OK, so I have a 5 gallon tank that's going through some major trouble now, but thank goodness it seems I am getting the situation under control and everyone is finally doing well.
That tank has a lava rock cave, a chaetamorpha from the reef store, a marimo Moss ball, A Moss ball from Mustafa, probably around 120-150 opae, not sure how many Mts, as they started reproducing, 2 nerite snails (one zebra and one black racer), and a Dwarf Hawaiian hermit crab. It has a HOB filter at the moment with purigen and chemi pure elite, but once the current problem is solved the filter will be removed. I also have a cuttlebone piece as I don't have any corals in the tank.

I am also cycling a second tank, a 10 gallon tank, it's been cycling for a month. In it I have 10 MTS snails 8 giant Marimo balls, one chaetamorpha. I have a sponge filter running that was from another tank and will be turned off once I add the Shrimp. A pile of lava rocks forming a small cave, a large coral.
This tank will have Opae and MTS only, and my plan is to not feed if at all possible. It will not be filtered either.
Now you guys, what is your set up like, and what lives in your tank?

I have 5 tanks. 10 gallon, my original since 2008 I believe. I would guess a thousand shrimp. Two 7.5 gallon tanks. These two tanks are stubborn. About 70 shrimp in each and very little breeding. Two one gallon tanks. Both started with 25-5mm juvenile shrimp. The older one of the two are breeding nonstop. About two years old with over 200 shrimp. The newest one gallon about a year old. Most shrimp are adult size but no breeding yet.

Wow! Five tanks!
Ken, do you keep only shrimp on them? Snails? Anything else? Why do you think some are breeding and the others not so much? Thanks.... Just a curious girl over here!

One 10 gallon tank, running for 2 years, with about 90 shrimp, mostly young. No filter or aeration. Hermit crab gravel and crushed shells for substrate which has grown a ton of algae. One macroalga clump. Fake corals for decoration with a few shells from a local saltwater aquarium dealer. Illumination is a 10,000 K fluorescent bulb which I change once a year. It does not get any direct sunlight.

They all have snails. Both nerite type and the ones Mustafa sells. Two have hermit crabs. Will not do that again. They really add nothing. All tanks have Mustafa's macro algae. The small tanks use led lights and the other three have fluorescent lights. I have covers on all tanks, loosely covered. No clue why two of the five breed like crazy and the two 7 gallon do little to nothing.

In order of age of setup:

A 3-gallon tall glass vase, I've had the shrimp in there about six years. There is a little Tahitian moon sand at the bottom, as well as a small amount of white aragonite sand, a seashell or two, and a layer 2-3 inches deep of egg-sized red lava rocks (yeah...red. It was all I could find at the time. :D )
There are over 100 shrimp, not sure exactly how many. They have bred in there numerous times. At the moment, there is at least one berried female, but no larvae. I just moved it to a north-facing windowsill. There is no other light source.

A 2-gallon cookie-jar style glass container. It's probably about five years old. Essentially, everything in there is the same as the above setup, only there are fewer shrimp (60-80?) and currently 10+ larvae, along with several berried females. It is across the room from a south window, and is not far from the ceiling fluorescent fixtures.

a 10-gallon setup, which I began in February 2015. It's got a 1/2 inch layer of aragonite sand, two piles of egg-sized BLACK lava rock, one of Mustafa's mini moss balls, and about 75-95 shrimp. There's at least one berried female in there, and one lone larva has been floating around for about a week. The attached picture is of that very larva. :D I have a 23 W 6500 K bulb in a desk lamp illuminating one side of the tank.

a 5.5 gallon setup, also set up in February 2015, with aragonite sand and black lava rock, a 14-watt aquarium fluorescent fixture, 35-50 shrimp, and at least 7 floating larvae.

I forgot to mention that in the two largest tanks, I also have MAlaysian trumpet snails, and in the 3-gallon and 5.5 gallon, I currently have one olive nerite each, mwhich I rotate depending on algal profusion. :D

My turn. :) Since my breeding tanks don't count, I'll just mention my small "fun" jar in my kitchen. half a gallon (1.8 liters to be exact). 10-11 shrimp, sand substrate with a large coral rock. Three of the mini mossballs, some Macroalgae (although the Macro hasn't grown at all in this tank in 6 months). I feed this tiny one once every month or month and a half or so. Just one of the females carry one egg around (must have dropped the rest), so with a little luck I'll have reproduction in this tiny jar. :)
