Detritus Everywhere

Post by sabbylina »

In preparation for new additions to my tank, I just removed everything and rearranged it. Also, one of the main things I did was replace course gravel/pebbles with fine sand. I didn't change the water though.

Now, all this white detritus is just sitting on top of my beautiful sand and looks gross. After a few hours, a tiny bit has started to sink through, but will the rest of it? With the gravel I never even noticed it because it was always buried in the substrate. i'm really worried i'm going to be stuck with a gross film on top of everything forever. Does anyone have any words of wisdom?

Without a picture I would guess the white material is from the sand. It will settle out. Also the shrimp will move it over time. At least that is what happens in my tanks. That is why I do not disturb the tank. I also try to avoid fine sand since it is hard to remove all fines. Send a picture.
