Help identifying algae

Post by Carolina »

Hi :smt006
This is what I have been calling tank #2 - it had a huge problem with cianobacteria, but that's gone now....
Anyways - I have two different agae growing that I can't identify..... If any of you have ever dealt with this....

Here is the first one:

As you can see, it grows like grass, in little tuffs. I can see two right now, but I am sure more will show up.

The second one is this one:

It has grown only on one side of my glass, the side whre the light is more intense (my light is on the front of the tank. It's NOT hair algae - the "hair" strands are thicker, don't spread all over the tank, are denser and shorter. Also, the snails like the, quite a bit.
As you can see from the picture taken from the outside of the tank, the snails have been going at it.

This tank is not fed, so "not feeding the tank" is not a solution for taking care of the problem.

Any idea of what these agae are?

The first one looks interesting! Never seen anything like that before. I like the look of it.
The second algae looks like common algae found on glass walls of marine tanks.
Just wondering how you get those types of algae. Did you use live rock? Natural seawater mix?

I wish I know their names! Haha! :P Hopefully somebody can identify it.

I don't think the one on the wall is the regular algae we get in tanks.... At least this is a first for me, and it's concentrated on that spot only, while I have algae (the regular type) on all other walls. This particular one is hairy, the hair strands are about 1/2" long, thicker than hair algae, and dense. It's pretty stuck to the glass.... You can't just pull them.... Maybe shave it.... The snails love it though, so I am living it.
As for the first one, yes... Interesting, huh? Looks like grass!
Never used live rocks... Only lava rocks, dead coral, distilled water and ocean salt.

i have some strange algae too but not as dense as the grass looking one you have shown in the first photo. These strands grow off the ocean rock and reach a good few inches long but they get eaten quick

For the second algae... I mentioned marine tank a.k.a fully saltwater tank, that I've seen them haha!
What's the salinity like right now?

1.010, it gets a little higher with evaporation, but I don't think much. I am pretty good at topping it off.

There are so many types of hair algae (and other algae) that it's almost impossible to say what any of us has without looking at it under the microscope. And eve then it's difficult. I've seen both types before but they disappeared in my tanks. Probably got outcompeted.
