Female with eggs...but no male

Post by Mustafa »

Hi people,

Just wanted to share an observation I've been making for about 4-5 days now. I have a small desktop tank (among many) where i have only 4 female Supershrimp. Against all expectations one of them started carrying eggs a few days ago. I thought she'd drop them but she's carrying the same 4-5 eggs around as we speak.

I'm going to observe and see what happens. It would be interesting to discover that this species doesn't need any males after all. :) (Just speculating at this point of course).

Very interesting. We could speculate that females store sperm. Or may be she would produce males that she could mate with thus starting a new colony. That and their long life would make them a great colonizer species.

I had the same storing-sperm-thought.
How old was the female when you put her in the tank? I assume she came from one of your general tanks...

I saw a theory saying Halocaridina can change sex over lifetime... But that kind of animals are usually as mâle and then become female...

At least in this case I have to disappoint everyone. The female dropped her eggs. So, at this point we can assume that they are just "normal" animals that need both genders to reproduce. No idea about the sex change thing, but that would need some experimenting.
