My Supershrimp Journal

Post by Oople »

Hi all, just starting my shrimp tank journal thread.

The home tank is doing well. The macroalgae turned white on the top of the clump. I tried to pull off the white parts. There were a few wisps of hair algae growing on the coral but I pulled off what I could with the giant tweezers. The shrimp seem to be doing well. Had 6 babies a couple weeks ago and saw a berried female hiding in the rocks.

The work tank Is now about 2 months old and seems to be holding steady. There's no light on it and it sits in the dark on weekends. I love having the shrimpies with me at work. They are so fun to watch and are a great stress reliever.

More babies this week! I counted 14 floating babies and saw another berried female today. I got a picture with a berried female and a baby floating in the same frame. Blurry but exciting!

Now I'm just waiting for my work tank to start growing.

Thanks, I think it’s a half gallon Anchor Hocking jar. I got it at Target. If I could start over I would get the one gallon jar because it’s taller, or maybe one without a shoulder at all. With the half gallon sitting on my desk, the shoulder of the jar makes it hard to see the shrimp from a normal sitting position. I have to lean over and bring my head down closer to the same level so the jar to see them better.

Sorry for the late reply, I forgot that I had made this post!

I don’t have a recent pic of the Work tank but I think I’ll be changing it out. The shape of the jar makes it hard to see the shrimp from a sitting position.

Your tank looks great! What are the white rocks that you're using? Where would I be able to find them? Thanks!

Thank you. :)
The rocks are small pieces of coral collected off the beach back when it was still legal.

I’m finally making the switch to a different work tank. I moved the rocks and coral from my old work tank into the new work tank. I am not sure if I’ll be able to tell when it has cycled because there’s already algae growing on the coral but I’m hoping I’ll be able to see something on the tank walls maybe. Meanwhile it looks like the shrimpies are living in an underwater desert.

New shrimp roommates! 10 snails arrived today and I put five of them in my home tank. It’s gotten the shrimp all riled up. A few even grazed on one of the snail shells.

The other five are coming with me to work tomorrow for the work tank. I’ll update with pics tomorrow!

Thank you! I started off with maybe 20 shrimps, added a light, ordered a dozen shrimp from Petshrimp a year ago, and the population has done really well. There is definitely a spring rush going on right now.

Just hope the work tank is doing this well at the end of year.
