Growth in tank

Post by ozs »

There is a pretty significant growth in the bottom of the tank. I'm not sure if it's beneficial for the shrimp or not.
I've lost about 3 sets of babies over the past few months. No food added to the tank.
Snails seems to be doing very well, there are many of them hanging around.
Any opinions on this? Should I try to remove it or not worry about it?

Looks like a lot of hair algae. Not olny on the bottom but also the glass. Dud you use tap water or distilled water? How old is your set up?

I use distilled water. The setup is a little under a year old.

Is hair algae a problem, or should I just let it grow?

For me personally I would pull as much as I could by hand.

For that much growth to happen you must have been either feeding a lot or your substrate came with lots of organic material which then decayed and provided excess nutrients. Just stop feeding for a very long time. And, as suggested, you can pull out the hair algae as much as you can. If you leave some in there, that's fine. The snails will eat the rest (looks like the hair algae is actually dying) and the macroalgae will outcompete it over time as the snails aren't eating the macro.

Thanks for the responses. I'll pull some of the algae.

The small chunks of coral were given to me by an aquarium store. Perhaps those are the culprit.

No problem! And yes, it's most likely the coral that caused the organic pollution.
