Do I need a refractometer or hydrometer to measure salinity? or if i halve the directed salt amount I should be good?
Do I need any Ammonia testing kits/ other testing strips and stuff?

If you follow Mustafa's method, no testing should be necessary. So you don't "need" those things. If you're just curious and want to know your tank conditions then you could buy them. It's just personal preference.
