Question about sudden increase in activity

Post by Ula Hula »

This morning I noticed that my shrimp are suddenly very active and zooming around the tank, with a few chases going on. It reminds me of the way they get when I put a shrimp pellet in the tank, but I haven't fed them for several days. I did notice some molts going on and I'm wondering if the hormones that are released in the water during the molting could be accounting for their sudden frenzy? No other conditions have changed, at least that I'm aware of. Thanks for any insight.

You might have caught a mating frenzy! The males will chase the recently-molted female around the tank and try their best. Keep an eye out for berried shrimp soon :)

Thanks -- that's what I'm hoping is going on. They are zooming around again this morning. Fingers crossed for shrimp grandbabies -- ha ha.

I have seen this in my tanks too...sometimes attributable to making a change in the aquarium, (such as moving some lava rock) but other times, I don’t do anything at all, and the shrimp act like they’ve all had on of those crazy energy drinks!

What I find interesting is how when I make a small adjustment in a tank, and see that only 1 shrimp seemed to be upset by it or even noticed it, if I check 10 minutes later it seems like most of them are acting upset! It's almost like an upset shrimp will communicate that state to the others and make them join in.

Well, well, well ... Look at what I just saw! It's the first mother-to-be in the tank (I got shrimp last September). I guess the activity paid off. Hooray! :D

You should have shrimp larvae and babies by now. How are they doing?
