Shrimp dead in substrate

Post by ktha »

Hey all!

This morning I found one of my shrimp dead, buried deep under my gravel substrate. It almost looks like he burrowed down and then was crushed when the rocks shifted? Has anyone seen this behavior before? I took out the body, but I'm wondering if I should use a different substrate to make sure this doesn't happen again. Right now I have bits of gravel in there about a half centimeter in diameter.

I doubt if he was crushed but he might have been unable to push the gravel back up and suffocated.

It's more likely that the shrimp just died there naturally. These shrimp are very good at getting into and out of crevices. If you keep seeing any more deaths, I'd start worrying about your water and do a large water change. If not, just leave it be.
