My new Opae Ula tank (#5)

Post by Corucia »

As it's been a few years since I set up a new Opae tank - - and I'm getting tired of staring at the wall in my home office while on work calls during COVID lock-down - - I decided to prep a new set-up that I wanted to share with the forum.

It's based on a 20 liter / ~5.25 gallon Ace Glass laboratory flask that I picked up on eBay a few years ago (a cool NOS piece that was in a lab's inventory for years). I'm hoping to emulate the success that I've had with another large flask (40 liters) that I set up a few years ago (pic attached).

I'll post updates once the tank cures and I begin to introduce the shrimp.

I love the look of these flask tanks. Is that a light in the lid? Did you add it or did it come that way?

Hi, the light is actually a Kessil A80 unit. I’ve been using the same model on my 40 liter set up with good results. It generates a natural sunlight spectrum and you can adjust both the light color/temperature as well as intensity. It happens to fit perfectly on top of the flask opening (~5” diameter)

Thanks Mustafa. I just reoriented the tank a bit, added some different (Dragon) stones and introduced the micro algae, snails and some brackish water copepods (as well as some phytoplankton). I will post more as I migrate some shrimp from my other tanks into this once it cures.

With six weeks behind us, the tank was finally cycled and introduced snails and shrimp this week. All are happy and healthy
