Shrimp has spot on back/eggs?

Post by NewShrimp »

Hi everyone!
About a month ago, I opened up my ecosphere and moved my 2 shrimp into their new, 1 gallon home. They are doing great so far!
Anyways, 2 days ago, I went to turn off their light for the night, and I noticed that the one shrimp had a visible dark circle-like spot on its back. It's never been there before, and about a week or so ago, I found a molt in the tank. I read that they normally breed after the female molts. I was just wondering what this spot was, and if it's not eggs, then what is it? I took the picture on my phone, so if I need to upload a better one, I can try.
Thanks a bunch!

Several of mine have black places too. A few are much larger than this. Don’t have any answers, but at least you’re not alone.

That's just it's stomach that's full of food. The dark stripe is the gut or intestine. Being full like that is a very good sign.

Looks like she's growing some eggs! That's where the ovaries are located. When the "spot" gets bigger we refer to the shrimp as being "saddled." 👍

ETA:Also could be food as DCH48 says. If it's eggs it will get bigger!

That could be possible too

Thanks for all of the responses! I will keep watching the spot and see what happens. Whether eggs are forming or not, I'm glad that the shrimp are doing well in their new home. :D

That’s most likely food or eggs

I have several adults that have the dark spots covering their backs and several younger ones that have smaller marks on their backs.
I'm not sure if those are eggs or not.

I took a pic with my tablet. Sorry.

Yes, those are eggs maturing in the ovaries.
