Keeping shrimp without macroalgae?

Post by cf21 »

My chaeto is falling apart into tiny strands and won't stay in a ball. Some of it is turning white too and it's getting everywhere. Will shrimps/snails be fine without any plants or is there any way to save the chaeto?

Third pic is from September when I got it. First pic I tried to add some fert, didn't work too well. Over half of the macro I got turned white or fragmented into tiny little pieces.

Where did the macroalgae come from? If I were to guess maybe you have a saltwater species?

Bought it from another hobbyist. Not sure if it is a saltwater species but he managed to keep it alive and well.

The Algae I have seems to be doing pretty good. If it continues, I'll collect a lot.

It looks like the saltwater stuff sold for reef tanks. That stuff always turns white and falls apart over time. The macroalgae available here is a different species/variety that does well in very low salinity water.
