brackish water mix confusion, going mad

Post by gagaliya »

Hi guys, really need some help with creating brackish water, a 5 min exercise has turned into a 3 hour ordeal, feel like i am going mad.

I am using
1) Instant Ocean: https://www.amazon.com/Instant-Ocean-Aq ... 130&sr=8-2

2) Digital salinity meter: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08GC7JCV3?ps ... ct_details

Instant Ocean instruction says 1/2 cup of salt for 1 gallon of water, since i am doing brackish i did 1/4 cup of salt for 1 gallon (of distilled water). I am using a 15mL measuring cap (1/4 cup =60mL=4 cap of salt). After putting in 4 cap (60mL) of salt, my salinity meter reads 5100 PPM or 51 PPT! if i look up the chart, that's 1.0386 god damn sg argh. I double checked everything, cant find any mistakes with my measurement etc...

Does anyone know what the heck is going on? is the Instant Ocean instruction wrong? am i not converting the meter's 51 PPT correctly to SG. I am pretty sure there is no issue with the meter, if it is inaccurate it wont be this drastic. I think i am making some very fundamental mistakes but cant figure out.

20 years of planted aquarium, first time mixing salt and epic fail :( please help

4 tablespoons mixed with 1 gallon of freshwater will make brackish water with a salinity of 1.010

You can remove some water and then add some distilled. You're fine. Throw out the meter. You do not need it.
