Amanos attacking/eating smaller shrimp

Post by rclover »

I'm not sure if my tiger shrimps were dead or not, but I have witnessed on two different occasions, full sized amanos eating a tiger shrimp that looks fresh(alive, no milky or dead coloration) tails nipped off first. Should I remove the larger amanos?

So I too was wondering, has anyone else had this problem?

Amanos will not eat other live shrimp unless they are sick or near death. I have witnessed them attacking other shrimp (and fish even) for food though. They can be rather aggressive, but in the end, no actual harm is done to any of the other shrimp.

As fugly pointed out, Algae Eating shrimp are incapable (i.e. lacking the anatomy) of holding on to anything healthy, especially not anything the size of a tiger shrimp. Many people think their shrimp are eating other shrimp because they can't tell the difference between a half dead shrimp and a perfectly healthy shrimp. More experience observing shrimp over time will help out in this department.

Thanks for the information Fugly and Mustafa. :) I had become hesitant about eventually getting Amanos, but now see the fears were unfounded.

Rclover, sorry about your loss of a few Tigers! But I guess they were going away anyways... :?
