Ok, I checked the plastic cylinder in my foam filter and theres an opening nearly the entire circumferec in there. So I can see now how the water gets drawn through the sponge and goes through the filter, etc.
I guess maybe I should take the two plants I put in out and put Java Moss in there.
Man, its crazy how much money you can spend setting up a tank, especially when you get excited and jump the gun and buy stuff you have to scrap later on for the right stuff you should have bought in the first place. I would not be exaggerating saying that Ive got about 70$ worth of crap I cant use now. My own fault but Im glad Ive found a forum that can steer me in the right direction. You guys helped me find the right filter and answered another half dozen questions as well. Thank you!

Save the extra equipment for the next tank you set up, just in case you get bitten by the shrimp bug
