interesting. Do you think this pond holds adults, they make lots of larvae which are swept to sea, the babies metamorphose, and float back upstream where they're harvested?

Yes, I think that is just what they do. Give them a nice place to live, keep the predators away, and you have lots of shrimp.

oh, so the little portion of marine habitat is also protected? I didnt' think of that. It must consist of a lot of tiny-pored nets or walls? Almost like cloth? I would imagine it would get clogged with algae and detritus a lot and need regular cleaning/maintenance.

They do not protect the ocean. The inlet to the pond is netted to keep out fish, etc. from what I've read. There is not a lot on this as this industry is pretty secretive.

They are trying to keep the market to themselves. It is just a matter of time before the details are discovered and used everywhere.

hmm, interesting.
There's such a difference in attitude when it's done for $, versus us private hobbyists who do it for love and the learning experience. We're much more willing to hand out tips to help others, eh?

Understandable though when you have your livelihood tied up in something and what you've learned through hard work and study could be taken away in a season.

That's true, didnt' think of it that way.
Couldn't the inventors of this technique patent it? I guess the trade laws might be different in Southeast Asia.

The trade laws there are something like "stick 'em up!".

I remember one of your old posts about what the various educational titles mean. "B.S. = b***s***" etc.
I have to say, I agree. Even though I am currently working on my Master's of Science degree in marine ecology, I would say 98% of my colleagues don't even know what it means to cycle a tank. Academic knowledge is a far cry from real-life experience, and absolutely no substitute. Given the choice, I'll take my tank-keeping advice from hobbyists any day. I am the exception in that I try to balance both academics and practical know-how, but certainly a minority in that regard.

You will always be ahead of the game if you keep an open mind and have a good balance. Sad is the mind that is narrow and closed. No, I did not get that from a fortune cookie

so true! Especially bad is if someone thinks their education makes them immune to, or better than new knowledge.
No, I did not get that from a fortune cookie

lol

I wasn't even going there

The old saying about those who can do, those who can't teach has a grain of truth to it. We do and teach, but many teachers have never done anything but read books. Very sad.

funny you should say that. My ultimate career goal is actually to become a biology teacher at a community college. But again, I strive to be one of the exceptions who can both TEACH and 'walk the walk'.
