Don't worry about their poop. Regular water changes will remove excess waste since the waste dissolves in the water anyway over time. As to the special substrate that they want to sell you which supposedly eliminates water changes....it's probably bogus...don't buy it.

However, any type of play sand for use in sand boxes will do since it's supposed to be safe for children (who like to take sand in their mouths). Just make sure that you wash the sand until no dirty water flows from the bucket. Rinsing 2-3 times should be enough.

It's cheap to use Play Sand as a substrate, too. I payed about $2.80 for a 50 pound bag.

I remember seeing those kind of sand, will drop by Home Depot soon. Yes, children would put almost anything into their mouth just for the fun of it. The rinsing 2-3 times sounds wunderbar! I just rinsed some Onyx substrate ... it took me almost 30 minutes to clean up small amount to fit into a 2.5 gallon tank.

Boy, those sand are sure cheap over the border. I will have to check it out and see if Home Depot still carries it during the winter or not.

Putting the aquarium some were it gets indirect sunlight would be best.

I have plans but it is not feasible, that much I know. But this would be during Spring, preferably late Spring ... but I will see how it goes, am still cycling the tank so it would be a while before anything goes into it other than substrate, filter and plants.

I might get some Danios to cycle the tank, I think 1 would be more than sufficient to do the job.

Ooops, I meant TKD .. it must be me, I seem to have a problem with typing out acronyms, ask Mustafa, I make mistakes all the time ... and he forgives me all the time too ...
