Wanting to set up 3 gal acrylic tank for Opae Ulas using dry black sand and lava rock. Had these years ago but forgot how I started the cycle. I’m not a novice to salt tanks had 10 set up at one time in 2009. How does the cycle start with nothing for ammonia, nitrite then nitrates for cycle to begin? On my freshwater tank I used Stability and a tiny pinch of flaked food, which took 5 weeks to cycle. I’m a bit confused on the cycling of this shrimp tank. Any help is appreciated.

Nature will take its course in a matter of weeks. I usually wait 4-6 weeks which is sufficient.

So just allow water to stagnate? I’ll be waiting until spring to purchase opae ulas. I’m not very good at navigating these forums. What food is best for these little ones?

Food is usually provided naturally in the form of algae and bio film. Go to the main page of supershrimp.com and look for the step by step instructions on how to set up their new home. You will have to do some navigating of this website to educate yourself and to insure success in keeping opae ula.

Very appreciative Thank you Sliphorn.

You are welcome. And by the way, keeping opae ula is quite easy especially if you follow the step by step instructions put forth by Mustafa. Opae Ula do best when left alone. In other words, avoid all urges to mess with the tank set up and also read as many threads on the forum as you can. There are some very knowledgable contributors on the forum that provide a wealth of excellent information.
