I'll definitely have to give leaf litter a shot.

Heh, i'm about to go outside and look for some oak leaves. We should have oak anyway.

Great pictures, and it does show that the shrimp do love the oak leaves. How long have they been working on those leaves?

Thanks. I also noticed that you captured two berried females in the photos, a snowball and a CRS both carrying eggs

so are your tanks crawling with baby shrimp

The truth is that most everyone lives somewhere that they can collect a suitable and non-toxic leaf appropriate for keeping shrimp. Purchasing auctioned leaves is probably not necessary for the vast majority of us.

The CRS
I have only had them for 2 weeks.

The Snowballs
Are not producing all that fast.
Right now I have 2 females carring eggs. and 4 females just about ready to.

My Snowball tank
Has been my problem child.

Newjohn--My wife thinks I'm crazy too, and that she has to monitor me constantly to make sure that my craziness does not go out of control. The couple of times that I soaked oak leaves, I kept them in a jar on my desk for a few days. My wife eyed the jar with great suspicion both times. "What is this jar with water and junk sitting here for? Is it going to be here permanently?" I don't know what she's so worried about. When I plan on bringing critters home, I usually give her advance warning...

And then putting them in the freezer.

Lol Gregor, thats so funny. I get that kind of thing from my mom sometimes, like if I dump a bucket of water in the tub/toilet and forget to clean the gravel/aragonite that gets in there

Or i'll talk about a new thing I wanna get, and she will be like "and WHERE are these going to go". And then I reply "a new tank". Then I get that look like i'm crazy lol. Luckily the girl I want to ask out right now is really into pets too, so then we can both be crazy lol.

Hey NewJohn, I saw all your RCS at the store today, very pretty! Some gorgeous females, i'm tempted to pick up a few. With a strange turn of events, I was able to set up my tank today. I ended up going with a very thin layer of sand, and 2 sponge filters. I just need a strong light for Java moss and guppy grass now. Standard flourescent will work but its a tad too weak for optimum growth.

Forget the guppy grass. Stick with java moss.

As far as wierdness, my wife now has field trips to my aquarium & my neighbors invite me over to pick dandelions. If you are constantly odd, it isn't strange.

Ok, i'll stick with Java Moss. Why shouldn't I use Guppy Grass too?

Re-read Mustafa's article. Guppy grass grows too fast and pulls too much out of the water for the bacteria to grow the shrimp feed on. He hasn't presented any scientific proof of this, but when I've gone contrary to his advice the results have been less then optimal... actually pretty disastererous.

That is great to hear. About setting up a Shrimp only Tank.
The best advise I gave give you, Is take you time and let it cycle.
Or you will end up with alot of head ache's.

The RCS You saw, were they still in a tank with those painted "tetra's" ?
