The readiness of feeding (swarming) varies with type food and shrimp. The best way for you to know how much to feed is to put the food in and come back in an hour or two and see what is left and remove the leftovers. The next time you feed, feed the same amount MINUS the uneaten amount and see if this is gone in the sme amount of time. If it is all gone then this is the amount you should feed, you got the idea.
It may take a few tries (feeds) but you will get an average idea of how much to feed and just remove uneaten food after a couple of hours until you figure it out

Ok, thanks everyone. I had been feeding such a small piece and leaving it in there that I thought it was too small to pollute the water so much to impact the shrimp. Now I know that isn't the case.
I will do another 20% water change tonight since my one RCS should be letting her babies go any day now.

Flake food is a lot easier to deal with, or you can crush the discs.

Snails are helpful for cleaning up excess food, though you may end up with excess snails... I recently added a single dwarf puffer to my 10 gallon cherry shrimp tank to eat some of the ramshorns that have run amok. There was an old woman who swallowed a fly...
I have noticed a reduction in the number of baby snails, but the shrimp seem to be ignored. It makes sense, why chase shrimp when there's plenty of slow-moving food under your nose?

Woo I have RCS babies again. Must have happened last night. I see at least a dozen of them. It's silly I haven't been able to raise these in a dedicated tank but in my fish tank they breed like crazy.
I have done 3 20% water changes and 2 serious gravel vacs since I last fed (Wednesday). I now see little white worm/slug looking things (planaria?) on the glass which would indicate the poor water quality I had before.
