Hi

l bought a group of Glass shrimps today. Hope someone can help me answer some questions l have.

1. When l asked for the scientific name he told me they where called Caridina sp. Is that the right name? Do anyone have a link to a picture of this shrimp?

2. After reading the treads on this page, l think it may be Macrobrachium lanchesteri shrimps. What markings does it have that will help me make a positiv id?


3. Can l keep the Glass shrimp in the same tank together with Macrobrachium assamensis?

It would be better if you could post a picture of your shrimp. The term Glass Shrimp is given to many transparent shrimp and are often also called Grass shrimp & Ghost shrimp. Check the "Shrimp Varieties" link at the top of the page for many Caridina shrimp, but I think none of these are glass shrimp.

Ghost shrimp are also called glass shrimp and are Palaemonetes paludosus and there is a picture there. These are sold as feeder shrimp for fish food and normally are under 50 cents each.

A note: I don't believe these are widely sold, if at all, outside of North America.

Caridina sp.? means this is genus Caridina and the species is unknown.
Check Mustafa's Shrimp varieties above for many of the Caridina shrimp.

"Caridina" is most likely a misnomer for the "glass shrimp" you bought. The so called "scientific" names for almost all shrimp in the trade are wrong....utterly wrong in some cases, where a Macrobrachium is called "Caridina" and a Caridina is called "Palaemon" etc.

You will need to post a picture either way..... Other then here you are not going to find any more helpful information.

Hi Kirann, if you can't get any pictures, here's a thread that shows M. lanchesteri: viewtopic.php?t=969 though you still might not be able to figure out if that's the species you have; so yes, posting your own pic if you can, would help.

If you think you have M. lanchesteri, you should know they are aggressive shrimp and can catch and eat smaller fish. They can and probably will be aggressive towards one another too, so lots of hiding places for them helps, especially after a molt.

Typically, when they run into each other, the lesser shrimp will jump back as the aggressor approaches. That's where the broken line of sight helps - broken up by plants, ornaments, etc.
