i know this sounds stupid but, the only algae i'm seeing is the green spot algae on the glass. I've seen fish store having those nice looking dark hair algae that looks so elegant  ... i want to see my shrimps munch on these... on do you go about growing them?

Set up a separate 10 gallon aquarium and get a couple of mid-sized feeder goldfish and a few pind snails. Feed the fish a bunch.

Use an undergravel filter. You can put a few thengs in there that are easy to remove for the algae to grow on that you can easily move over to the shrimp tank.

Get a hood with a 2 bulb incandesent fixture. Get a couple of compact flourescent bulbs from the Walmart pet section ~$6 each. Don't put in any floating plants that might block the light.

Get a start of the hair algae from the pet store, or wherever you see it and toss it in. Before you know it the tank will be overrun with the stuff.

Goldfish and light=algae.
