Hybrid shrimp stopped reproducing.

Post by frugalfish »

My group of Neocaridina which is made up of Cherry Reds and their wild form have not produced any young in some time, months. Aside from the obvious stessors that that may cause shrimp to do this, are there other things that may affect hybrids differently than pure strains?

If your shrimp are the products of the mating between a Red Cherry shrimp and their wild form then they are technically not hybrids. They are still the same species. So, there should be no reason why their intermixing should affect reproduction.

Are they getting enough food? If your population is large enough that there is not enough food to go around then that population stops reproducing. I have observed that myself.

Perhaps it is a food availability issue. I am careful about overfeeding, but maybe in this case I'm being too cautious. I will slowly increase the feeding and see if it has any affect on their production.

Thanks.

I've found temperature and available space can also be a consideration with these shrimp. to have them breed you need to keep the temperature with 20-27ºC for optimum conditions. Higher or lower will affect egg retention amongst the shrimp.
