Prawn Diet

Hello,
My blue prawn has been very picky with its food lately. It use to eat whatever I throw in, but for the last couple of weeks it only goes crazy when I feed it algae discs. So to prevent leftover uneaten food from getting sucked into the filter, I've only been feeding it algae discs. Would that alone make a good diet for a good size prawn? He eats about 6-8 discs a day.

Maybe you should try feeding it some fresh veggies (sweet potato, cucumber, romaine lettuce, etc...). That's concerning that it will only eat algae discs and indicates to me that the prawn in lacking veggie matter in its diet.

Yes, it is a macrobrachium rosenbergii, got it at petco almost a year ago.
So far he seems in good health and very active. I guess that's a good indicator.

He has 7" body, at least 11" with arms. The last time he molted was a few days right after the new year.
I can see into his stomach located behind his eyes (especially when I use feed him yellow cheese, it gets filled up and starts breaking it down). So whenever it's empty, I'll throw another wafer in and he's all over it.

Ever try scamble eggs? I take an egg, mix it will a little milk, scamble it up & zap it in the microwave with no oil. cook it a real low heat so there are no bubbles. You want it to sink. I cut it up in bit sized chunks and feed itover a week until it starts to get nasty. I was told that eggs are something they really need as it is a good source of cholesterol, which they need but can't make themselves.
The other things I give them is cooked collards and sinking cichlid food.
Prawnman, check the arms! Some of mine have brightly colored pinchers now. They look pretty wicked.
