Bolivian Rams and Shrimp

I was looking into getting some bolivian rams for my community tank. I was wondering if anyone here had any experience with those fish. According to some company in Arizona [edit by Mustafa]they live just fine with shrimp. They seem really interesting and fairly intelligent animals and i like them.

I also only have 20ish gallons of water for them. I think that is enough but i want to be sure. It is currently pretty overstocked with fish but i'm planning on giving them away soon.

Also, what would bettas make decent tank mates for them? While i am willing to get rid of my guppies and danios i really like my 2 females and 1 male bettas.

Hi xerxeswasachump,

Your rams would call your shrimp lunch.

I did a search and it didn't come up with anything. I'm willing to believe you, but, are you sure of that? Keep in mind that i am referring to bolivian rams, not golden or blue rams.

Large filter shrimp species would probably be fine if they had enough places to hide and molt. Keeping or trying to breed any sort of dwarf shrimp would be pointless with any dwarf cichlid.. The adult shrimp will hide all the time you'll never see them and the babies will surly be eaten before geting anywhere close to adulthood. Bettas can't be trusted either.

Then you need to search a little better. Although bolivian rams might not have been specifically mentioned, the topic of compatible fish has been talked about countless times here, including the general topic of cichlids. Plus, it's mentioned in my introductory article. Did you read that? I don't think so. The betta question has been asked about a trillion times, too, and answered a trillion times.

I edited your above post and took out the link to the company you mentioned. It's against forum rules. First of all, if you had done a search you would have read about all the bad experiences that people have had with that company, and second, I don't allow commercial links in my forum. What they are saying about fish or shrimp is as close to worthless as can get.

So, bottom line, use the search button more efficiently and get informed better before asking a question that has been asked many times before. If you had actually read my article (at the least) you would know that anything with a normal fish mouth (as opposed to a "modified" one like a pleco) will eat at least juvenile shrimp. It makes no sense to come here and ask specificially if every one of the thousands of species of freshwater fish will eat shrimp. So, just because a species has not been mentioned here does not mean you cannot deduct very easily from what *has* been discussed if your fish will eat shrimp or not. It's just common sense. I consider it an absolute requirement that everyone who wants to post anything in this forum first reads all the information I have put up on this website first, and then searches the forum archives for any specific questions before asking them. You have shown in other threads, too, (such as the bamboo shrimp thread) that you do not read the information that is already available, nor do any searches, so this is a reccuring issue with you, despite the fact that you have been asked to use the search function several times. If you disregard all the information that is available here, people will disregard you and your questions in the forum. It's all reciprocal. Other forum members have been pretty nice and patient about it so far, but I need to set things straight.

That was a well crafted scolding if ever I saw one, but I recall one that I got as well. I chalk up what is happening here as youthfull exuberance. The old dogs can afford to be tolerant to the young pups. Give a growl to keep them in check, but don't chase them away entirely. Energy makes up for a lot, or we would not survive as a species.

I think you were tolerant enough for the both of us. If you noticed I waited for a while (several threads) before reacting. By the way, out little "conversation" back in the days was totally different from this. All you got was an, admittedly very direct, correction, not a scolding.

I just can't please everyone all at the same time. If people like the forum, they stay...if they don't, they go. It's all fine with me. I don't think everyone should be keeping pets anyway...only responsible people, or people who strive to finally become responsible. Part of being responsible in pet keeping is that you do as much research as possible on your pet. Ignoring articles and already available information in the forum is just not going to do it... I can understand if someone misses a few things after going through the available information, that's only human. However, if someone plain and simply ignores *everything* then I am absolutely not willing to hold that person's hands. I put a lot of work into the information available on this website and I don't take well to people just ignorning it and demanding the info to be spelled out for them all over again in the forum....for the 50th time.
