Adding filter to existing tank

Any ideas on how to best add a filter to a small existing tank? I can't get another tank to cycle it, etc. There is no equipment in the tank; so far it's done okay on plants and frequent water changes (I've had shrimp in it for about four months now).
The only animals in the 5 gallon tank are three Amano shrimp (who are very special
). I'd like to make their habitat as nice as possible (hence the addition of a filter).
I'm thinking the best kind would be an adjustable exterior power filter with some foam stuffed in the intake and output areas, since it would provide mechanical filtration in addition to biological. I know a lot of people on this site use sponge filters. Any suggestions?
Thanks!
