Dwarf Orange Cray/Brown mating right now!

Post by DanHagan »

Hey guys,
My dwarf orange female is matting with my dwarf brown male (he is carrying the orange gene). This SHOULD result in 75% orange and 25% brown offspring! Anyway here is the picture:

Actually, according to simple mendelian genetics (which is what I think we have here), you should be getting 50% pure orange crayfish and 50% brown crayfish that carry the orange gene.

In other words you have: Bo + oo = 25% Bo + 25% Bo + 25% oo + 25% oo

B=brown
o=orange
large letter = dominant trait
small letter = recessive trait

Either way, let's hope this mating results in eggs. :) Keep us updated.

The female is carrying eggs now and has been for about 4 days. Mustafa you are correct in the 50/50. I don't know what I was thinking! My wife would kick me for that (she is a zoologist!).

Just my thoughts with this species, I don't think the female would have to flatten her tail out. The reproductive organs are at the rear part of their legs and her tail was not up that far. Again, just my thoughts.

Anyway, I will keep everybody updated!

That's not a C. shufeldtii. That's supposed to be a C. patzcuarensis.

The eggs have hatched. I cant really see the babies yet, they are still hidding in the cave, but from what I can see, I would guess 20-30. Lets see how they do!

Crayfish Babies! (pics)

Post by DanHagan »

Well, the dwarf orange cray has had babies. They are tiny, about the size of a ball point pen tip. Hard to get pictures of them at that small. I have no idea how many I have! I have 5 separated so far, and am sure there are more in the mosses.

Sorry for how blurry the pics are but the crays are just so tiny!

I also received a shipment of Dwarf Cajun Crayfish as well.

How about an update on the baby orange crays? I'm still waiting to see eggs from my trio of orange/brown mix, and have 2 pairs of orange coming this week. I have a 30 long set up for them to move into.

What are your water parameters? How much/often do you feed the critters? I can't wait to see some baby crays live and in person. :lol:
